You know, the ones that always showed the sweeping cylindrical interior covered in cities and vegetation? Sometimes there'd be people on hang-gliders flying around, etc.
I used to see all kinds of those paintings in books about "the future" when I was little, and they always inspired me. In fact, they still do. Does anyone know of any online galleries of space colony-related conceptual artwork?
So far, no matter how hard I look, I just keep seeing the same 4 or 5 pictures of the Stanford Torus by Don Davis. He was one of the first, but I know there are more. Can anyone help?

For the same reason you said - cost. Look at the size of these big cruise ships that take people around the world. As more and more rich investors start seeing space tourism as a potentially profitable industry (like Virgin Galactic) so large orbitting hotels will gradually become a reality. At the moment though the cost to businesses of building something even the size of the ISS is prohibitivey expensive. It's even beyond Virgin Galactic's abilities to get a commercially viable orbital flight for space tourists - and that's just go up have one orbit around the Earth and come down again.
