the truth is no one can decide what is best untill he has the whole picture.
the poem by milton from where these lines have been taken ,"best "means the satisfaction of having lived a long honourable life,knowing for sure that he has sons to carry on his name,no stain on his soul and now nothing to worry either.
in other words complete saisfaction and peace of mind.
