The restaurant business has a very high failure rate. Running a restaurant is a lot more than just cooking good tasting food.
I linked to a Cornell University study if you want some really detailed info. Here I quote their conclusions:
"Our study indicates that the restaurant failure
rate is affected more by internal factors
than by external factors, although both
apply. Such attributes as restaurant den-
sity, firm size, and managerial characteris-
tics are important to success. In particular,
the manager’s ability to balance family
matters with the development of the orga-
nization is critical. Along with that balance,
it is important for the owner-manager to
have the requisite skills to run a restaurant.
While the restaurateur should plan care-
fully in growing the business, she or he
should be ready at any time to alter plans
in response to changes in external factors.
Finally, while formal marketing and
advertising seem not to be important to the
success of an independent restaurateur,
the restaurant must pay attention to com-
munity and customer relations so that it is
perceived to be a part of its community. "

I hate when that happens,
I had dinner on Thursday night at a restaurant in Norwich NY by the name of TriniSoul and i took some friends on Saturday and they were closed down, i was pissed.. The restaurant was the only one of it's kind in the area. They were doing really good, the place was always packed as far as I can remember. I wish I can find the owners and make some type of deal with them to make my food, I'll buy it from them.. the food was outstanding

It is true that the best products don't always make a business successful. There is so much involved in managing a restaurant, like food sources, food prep, pricing, competition, location, food costs etc. etc. I miss the H. Salt fish & chips restaurants we used to have and I also miss the Mom & Pop restaurants we had.

I had this one really good spaghetti place where you could get the most amazing pasta and garlic bread and i'm not a fan of pasta or garlic bread at all, but this place was absolutley Amazing! It closed down because it was hidden away in a bad location and everyone in that neighborhood was really poor. I think that if they were to move to a city or something they would have definitely made it big. Too bad. I'm craving it right now. Darn it!

poor management. They could have a lot of movement but if they are charging less than what they are spending then they will quickly go out of business, but that could also be why they are so successful - hey good food at tiny prices! It's usually something behind the scenes that is right.

most of the time that one place is owned by a company who also owns several other chains...Smokey Bones (a great BBQ chain) just closed 54 stores because they said those locations where not making the money they wanted them to make according to the email I just received...funny thing is the company who owns Smokey Bones, also owns Olive Garden & Red Lobster
and yes we're mad because we would rather eat there then the other 2 places because you have to wait forever to get a seat, and they never have parking

they may seem successful but not successful. their's so much inv olved other than food. like high insurances on the building, city taxes, food tax, lower one to make up for the other loss... its called competion....have to be #1 or next to it to survive in a food biss.
