When i was growing up in the 60's and 70's there was a distinct middle class. It seem's to me that today very few if any americans can be classified as middle class. What happened to cause the disapearnace?

I grew up middle class and the majority of our dads worked in factories which are now in Mexico. We are still middle class but we go unnoticed because we are too busy supporting rich and poor people who exploit the system. My husband works with a guy whose family is on Medicaid and he just bought a new Mustang. CEO's who get fired for lousy work get golden parachutes of billions of dollars. Middle class means paying your own way and getting sc*ewed.

Speaking for myself a lot of people considered to be making middle class income are not able to get assistance if needed because they are making 'too much.' I find myself paying full price for everything I need. Such as health insurance. We don't get free health coverage and can't afford a great health plan so we are stuck in the middle with a plan that doesn't pay enough and we are going in to more debt. I also went to college and owe student loans and I haven't found a great paying job YET which is driving me more in debt. Along with gas prices, food, and just the cost of living even though my income is considered middle class I am stretching it out so much I feel like I am at the poverty level! yikes

I see a lot of higher middle class and middle classes.
It's just where you live. Because I don't see any class lower than that in a place where I live.

They're still there, it's just that now people are more concerned with APPEARING to be upper-class than actually being happy with what they have. Spending outrageous amounts of money on crap you don't need tends to make you poor in a hurry.
