Faux is a French word for false or fake. It is often used for a way to make things seem real to to the eye.
Oak is just that...from a true hardwood tree and is used in the making of things to be beautiful and usefull but if its oak wainscot then its of true material and if its Faux wainscot then its usually just as pretty and usefull. ITS JUST NOT REAL, ITS FAKE.

Oak is a higher grade of wood than poplar or pine as most wainscoting is made from. Oak would look very nice stained where as most is painted.

With all due respect none of what you mention is faux wainscotte. It may however, be faux wood, IE: MDF ground up wood with a bodning agent, extruded or molded into varios molding shapes. Susceptible to water damage. Then there is PVC type cellular foam, which is becoming more popular.
Each of those are usually primed in retail outlets, and cannot strictly be stained. Neither will they have the texture or graining of natural wood, but they are widely used, particularly in tract house developments and are less expensive.

faux is just that - it's fake; not real wood
oak is just that - it's made of oak
oak will last a lifetime; the faux will not
