My son has a 1996 Taurus & after putting in a new battery, the brake lights no longer work. (The battery is the correct one, according to the manual.) The turn signals, which are on the same fuse, do. What the heck could be the matter here? Could this be a wiring issue?

OK it could be the bulbs that is where I'd start the next would be fuses after that be sure to check your grounds and if its none of them check for broken or frayed wiring starting at the brake light sockets and working your way towards the front of the vehicle. it could also be the brake light sockets also.

Since the car is a 2001 and I am assuming you got it new it should still have a warranty. Take it to the dealership and let them deal with it. But, if you can't I would do as the first poster suggested and replace the relay, bulb, and check the fuse you just replaced to make sure it isn't blown. If this doesn't fix your problem, you have a short in the wiring somewhere. Try one of those books you can get at your auto parts store for each specific car. It will have wiring diagrams and such to help you out. I had an issue with my Civic, each time I blew the horn my brake lights blew out. Turns out the wires were smashed where they go up into the spoiler on the back and were grounding out. They wire cars funny now, and the strangest things can happen. :) I hope you get it fixed, stuff like that can be such a pain.

Could be the light bulbs. I think you have 2 different light bulbs, one for the turn signal and one for the actual brake lights. The new battery could have burned the bulbs out. Also, check your fuses under the dash, plugging in a new battery could maybe have fried a fuse. Read your owner's manual to identify the fuse that is responsible for the break lights.

I have a RAM 1500 Van and the brake lights stop working. They were working before. I check all the fuses and master fuses and all are good.
Now everything else is working except for the stop lights. Any suggestions?

try wiggling the bulbs some times they just come loose. have that happen many times with my stang or you could have a short in you wires some where check your wires all the way back for cracks or wires just hanging out. if you might of arched the battery connectors that could of caused a blow fused, on my car there is two fuse boxes one under the dash and under the hood

not neccesarily a wiring issue, check the break light switch, you can also go to the auto zone with the car and they will put the hand held machine that checks for the error codes....it could be few things, good luck
