My HP computer is 5 years old. I have not had problem yet, but started thinking that if I have to replace hard drive I checked info on computer and it has a partition on computer for recovery, (no recovery cd included) . Later models have an option to make a set of recovery cd's but not mine. If hard drive goes out , how do you access the recovery?
I think it might have something to do with D drive by what I read but I don't know how that works. I thought everything was on one hard drive. I not that up on computer lingo. Any input would be appreciated. My computer is a desktop with XP Home Edition.

If you have only ONE Hard disk and it is partitioned as C D E etc,
....1. Your Operating system files/folders are in C:/Windows.
.......2 Also different drivers required for webcam/printer/internet modem etc.
.........3 Also C:/Program files where you have number of programs .
So if HD crashes even if you have a backup it is lost.
You have to back up the files first in the D: directory and then transfer them to a CD with your CD writer.

Better to connect another hard disk and make back ups there.
( Presumption both HD's won't crash together !)
Programs can be downloaded later , but not your personal/private/mail data. which also should be backed up.
I am not a Pro and tried to make things simple for you.

Back up : My computer C: Click Properties
Tools
create backup. Follow simple instructions.

I just did a PC Recovery on my HP notebook. Boot your computer, and at the "splash" screen press F11 and hold it for a few seconds. It will boot right to the recovery partition. Follow the directions (it's very easy) and the PC will "recover" in approx. 25 minutes. You will only have to press a couple of keys and it will do everything else on it's own. Everything on your computer, (software, drivers, utilities, etc.) will be on the PC when the recovery is complete. You will lose any pic's music, files, etc. so you will want to back them up if you can. Good Luck!

"Later models have an option to make a set of recovery cd's but not mine." is not true.

RTFM, the instructions are in the User Manual to create your own Recovery CD.
