The equals sign, =, was invented in 1557 by Robert Recorde, a Welsh mathematician. It was originally written with much longer lines than we typically use now. The equals sign signifies that the two quantities are equal because the lines are parallel, and therefore sit at equal distances from each other on both sides. The symbol did not catch on immediately; a double pipe, ||, as well as "ae" for the Latin word "aequalis," remained popular in mathematical notation into the 18th century.
