It still happens. They learned how to be friends and overcome such obstacles as the empty nest syndrome and mid life crisis. They all should get the golden award!

I think that in today's times they are a rarity. It is too easy to get divorced if you have problems, instead of working through them like people used to do. I speak from experience, I'm recently divorced myself. I tried working at it for several years but it takes 2 to make a marriage work. I think anyone who has made their marriage last 20 years or more(yes, there are a few out there!) should be commended.

Hi. After 20 years, married people are more likely to be buddies, than newlyweds. The passion component is also likely lower than it used to be, but they've learned how to deal with the challenges of marriage, and look at life more realistically. It's more chill, generally. (*There are always exceptions, however*)

The reason why marriages don't last 20 years or more is because people just plain don't committ to one another. Everyone feels they need to get married and just don't go into depth what it takes to make a marriage work.

All you have to do is read the questions people write on this site ....

I will have been married for 21 years in July. So far, the 21st year is quite a bit like the 19th, so I'm not sure I understand the question. We're more confident with each other than we used to be, feel more secure, and communicate more effectively. We have always been and still are affectionate toward and appreciative of each other. We are not "bored" with each other, but then excitement was never a big component of our relationship -- we're more like a deep, tranquil lake than like a whitewater river.

PS -- the word you meant to spell, I believe, is "marriages".

Society made divorce more acceptable. And women gained a voice about the way they would and would not be treated in a marriage.
