If your pet cow broke its leg, would you send it to slaughter or spend an outragious amount of money to get it fixed? Remember, this cow is your baby.

This didn't happen to my cow, but I was just wondering...

Maple(my pet cow)would most likely go to slaughter cause I couldn't afford to fix her leg if she broke it.

Mel-I didn't know your moms horse
broke its leg!?!

I'd definitely get it fixed if I could. I have a pet cow and everyone thinks I'm crazy. She is my baby. Her mom abandoned her and I bottle fed her for months. I'm her momma.

People really thought that I was just kidding and was going to slaughter her for meat. Never in a million years.

She's about 2 years old now and she just had a baby that I wasn't expecting. Some bull next to our property obviously got to her, before they were all taken away from being starved to death.

It was quite a shock. I had no idea she was pregnant and she had the sweetest little baby boy.

People are saying, you're going to eat this one aren't you. Never. They are both pets. If anything happened to either, I'd do anything in my power to save them, just like I would a cat or dog.

Call me crazy, but I could never eat my pets.

A major bone break in a cow would be just as much a hard case as a horse - maybe worse since cows are tend to have more weight...
I HAVE cared for "down" cows with more cureabele problems by the time a month was up for a broken leg cow slaughter would be a relief for everyone including the cow...

i am sorry katie but my cows would go to slaughter. haha that was probably where it was headed anyway, that or auction but still. we didnt even spend the outrageous amounts of money on my moms horse. she was put down. actually that would be another option. the cow probably wouldnt be able to make it to the slaughter house because it wouldnt be able to stand in the trailer.

and it was meadow that did. we got her with jessie and she was older and she ran up the hill one day and broke her leg. we had to put her down like an hour after and i never got to see her that day cause my parents didnt want me going out there. i hadnt gone out to see her the night before either. it was really sad. dont worry though it was a few years ago and it wasnt merlin.

I have a show chicken that I keep with my fowls.....but at the end of the day, she is a chicken. I started raising farm animals to feed my children, and should she break a bone.....the kids will be eating chicken that night.

It's not about cruelty when a person is raising farm animals, it's about practicality. Small farms to not get into for money. In my case, it's a way to be able to afford fresh meat, eggs, and produce that has not been chemically or genectically altered. (I'm a single mom with severe food allergies raising three kids with food allergies)

Outrageuos medical proceedures are not garaunteed to work, the are more trauma than is humane for the farm animal, and at the end of the day it's just not cost effective.

As to the above post....no, I would not put a baby down, and at the same time, I would not pull food from my babies mouths to save a cow that could go to the dinner table to ensure that my children grow into streong healthy adults.

If it is a cow that your friend uses in shows, I would see how much it is to get the leg fixed. Usually with large animals, it is hard to get the animals to keep weight off of their broken leg. So, I'm sure it would cost quite a bit of money to have the leg fixed. If she truely cares for the cow, I doubt she would want to have it slaughtered.

Get it fixed. Would you send your child to a slaughter? Or get it taken care of? And yes, it's JUST A COW, but cow's are my favorite animal, and I wouldn't send it to a slaughterhouse just because it broke it's leg.

I would try to do something, but if I couldn't afford to get it's leg fixed, and it was just in pain take it out of it's misery and make some steak!

Farm animals aren't typically rehabilitated. The cost/benefit just doesn't add up. Likely, the animal would be slaughtered. Cows aren't babies, they are cows. Babies are newborn humans.

If I was really really attached to it, I would get it fixed. Otherwise I would get it slaughtered. May my cow's soul rest i peace...
