What would the auto industry do if people all around the world “Stop buying or leasing NEW gasoline powered cars”? Would they wait to go bankrupt? Would they try selling different cars, like the Chevy Volt or the Ford Edge with HySeries Drive? And how long would it take? 3 months, 6 months, a year?

They would not wait to go chapter 11.
Month 1. They would wonder why people aren’t buying or leasing.
Month 2. They would lower there prices and offer incentives.
Month 3. They would cut back production and reduce headcount. (Like some are already doing)
Month 4. They would introduce new technology, like the “Chevy Volt and the Ford Edge with HySeries Drive”. People who recently bought or leased a new car would be upset because they could have waited and purchased a 100mpg electric hybrid car.
Month 5. Do to high demand; they would begin to higher back employees.
Month 6. Their Stock prices would go through the roof.
Month 7. Oil companies, refineries & especially OPEC would be upset.

Because Gasoline is the best propelent we have at this time. Or do you want more coal fired power plants to recharge your VOLT? Hybrids and electrics are problems because toxic batterys will wear out. Cars with two propulsion systems are much more complex. Besides my 400 hp car gets 25 miles a gallon on the highway. I prefer power to get around your little tiny Hybird or electric and when I turn on the A/C I want cold air to escape the global warming I'm causing. Then I accelerate to 100 mph in less than 12 seconds.

It would be very interesting if as many people as possible just did not buy a new car for one year. That'll throw the industry into a tailspin. It would wind up with lots unemployed people, and that's not good. Manufacturers would go nuts trying to move cars out the door. Nobody buy a new car in 2008. I'll do my part.

Nice hypothetical question, but the world will NEVER "not buy" gas powered until the source is depleted. There is just too much infrastructure, investment, and honestly, just bad ecological thought process by people, to not buy gas powered vehicles.

Humans don't make changes very often voluntarily. It takes a life altering event to make us change. We're not creatures of adaption, we're creatures of comfort.
