'beuuty-t', above, is absolutely correct in her answer.

The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 states that a front number plate (registration mark) shall be black letters on a white background. Yellow is for the rear plate of UK vehicles.

(See DVLA website.)

NB If you want a yellow front plate, register your car in the The Netherlands!!

You are supposed to have a white plate on the front and a yellow plate on the back. I've not seen any cars with yellow number plates on the front.
Presuming you're from the UK!

It should be white. Rear plates are yellow.

Some shops supply new plates with a yellow or pink protective strip over them which you remove before fitting (I think it helps prevent splitting when drilling holes in the plate for screw-mounting) - if you peel this off, you should have a white plate underneath.

The plate should be made up of three layers:
a clear plastic layer (about 2-3mm thick)
black lettering
a white (on the front) background.

If your yellow layer is on top of the lettering, it is a protective strip you should remove. If it is behind the lettering, you have a rear number plate.

The vehicle number plates in the UK are White at the front and yellow to the rear. This is covered under the "vehicle and licensing laws"
You have just got a rear one, don't fit it to the front and whoever told you it is a front one is *wrong*

Yellow's for a rear plate, front plates must have a white background in the UK. Whoever made it for you either made a mistake or you didn't tell them correctly.

The rear plate is reflective. This format came in to being at the same time as the need to park a vehicle ,at night, with the lights on. The headlights of an approaching vehicle would illuminate the numberplate so negating the need to have the lights on the stationary car. They also assist the recognition of registeration numbers with speed cameras.

Legally it should be white. Yellow is for the back.

White on the front and yellow on the back is the norm, but I have seen a lot of cars with both yellow, so guess it isnt illegal.

Cant find anything saying the law on the dvla website either, so you should be ok.
