I am guessing that you mean an element that separates memoirs from biography/autobiography. That would be the personal treatment of a limited portion of the person's life, understanding that their is going to be a bias.

They very much resemble autobiographies, except that their more or less about that individual's favorite memories. Hence the term memoirs.
