Basically it is the much quoted omega 3. Levels are high in Salmon, halibut, shrimp, cod, scallops and tuna. It is present also in may non-fish sources. They can also be easily obtained in supplement form.

Cod liver oil is very good, but there is the risk of contaminants from the pollution in the seas, so one which has been 'cleaned' is preferable. I've done lots of reading on this topic and the one I think has the highest level of epa/dha and lowest level of mercury is shown at the link below. Of course fresh fish is ideal but some people don't like it and because of the pollution the government recommends a limit on how much is eaten (see other link)

Omega 3 is the oil that has been proved to be beneficial, high quantities can be found in oily fish like makerel, sardines and salmon. if you can't be bothered cooking fish then you can buy cod liver oil capsules from the shops, or, if you're really brave, you can still get it in liquid form and have a teaspoon of it each day. I would strongly advise against this metho though because it tastes absolutely revolting.

used to be cod liver oil in the old days, basically all fish oil sold today is from either salmon or cod, and it doesn't make any difference which fish you get it from, it all works the same way. It's just nice now that you can take it in capsule form instead of having to drink the liquid which was pretty nasty.
