The date of the first published reference is 1704. The seven colours were named by Isaac Newton in his book "Opticks", in which he described experiments with prisms that showed white light to be a mixture of many colours.

The use of these colour names was not intended to be definitive, merely a rough description, but unfortunately Newton's statement has been misused time and time again by teachers who will insist on saying that there are seven colours in the rainbow.

This is nonsense, as the electromagnetic spectrum is continuous and the number of colours you can find is limited only by the resolution of your spectroscope.

Newton. It was done for religious reverence for the number seven, the days of the week, the notes on a musical scale, etc.. Indigo is crap.
