This is a matter of preference. I painted mine a satin white: some paint them an white enamel: my daughter stained hers.

Go to Home Depot for a good choice of color or Lowes or if you live close to an Ace Hardware.

If this is natural wood, then primer first then apply the color. Just use regular latex paint.
