Many other cricketing nations love their cricket, Australia for one, but yeah, India is a special example. I guess it's because it is by far the most popular sport, yet the team has yet to dominate the cricketing landscape. Inflamed passions are pretty common in India when it comes to cricket and just as Indians are quick to praise and idolize new and old heroes, such as Dhoni and Tendulkar, they have passionate knee-jerk reactions to defeat or poor form. Indians love their cricket but seem to be let down by poor infrastructure, inflated egos in both the playing and administration areas and an undue influence from a myriad of factions. Sort these out and we'll see a team that matches performances to the passions of the fans.

Because cricket is most popular game in India and lot of coverage is given to cricket by the Media than any other sports in India. This is one of the reason for the decline of Indian cricket as the players are taken to sky high if they score a century or take couple of wickets and they become complacent.

India has many religions in the whole country. e.g. Hindu, Islam, Sikh, Buddha etc. and many more. So, sometimes some people in India try to tag their "madness of cricket" as a religion. So, they all come under 1 religion. I think you are one of those who tag it as a religion.
If you see the sports in India, only Hockey team seems the good after cricket. People in India see only two of their teams who win the matches. That's why, If one scores a century and by dint of his century if India win the match; people treat him as a god.

Well Said, Sreesanth!!! Ppl are treating cricket in india as a religion and pakistanis do it to, only a lot less.... That's why we have violence from fans just becoz we lost a mathc against Bangladesh or Sri lanka..... They should stop treating the sport as a religion and the players as gods.... it just doesnt work that way!!!!

Team sport has power unite a nation into one. Individual sports just can do that. Individual success of Leander and Bupathi and Sania Mirza has rasied interest in Tennis.

Perhaps India has done well (relatively speaking) in cricket in recent past that any other team sport (India has no significant positioning in Hockey or Football today)

It is mainly because the masses look at the cricketers as if they are some kind of gods......and coverage of other sports are minimalistic. Also, Indian contingent in other sports are not much....for example, in F1 only Karthikeyan is the sole Indian representative....and likewise Sania Mirza in tennis.......
The basic reason is that other sports haven't gained prominence in large parts of India..and since cricket is the only thing we are reasonably good at [hockey comes close, but popularity is low] ,we look at cricketers in godly fashion. In Australia and South Africa, cricket is very popular, but they don't worship their cricketers..they look at them as mere sportsmen.and that allows the cricketers to perform better as the pressure of expectation is much lesser.

For a sport to become a religion, the sportspersons of that sport must be very successful, in india since cricket is the lone sport which is most successful compared to others in the last few decades, it has become a religion.

Not scoring simply centuries, but the way they make it makes them delirious.
