I already have 'more skills needed', 'takes longer to use some programs', 'files can be lost or deleted', have I missed any?

Webstarts.com is your answer. It's free to sign up and their online editor uses simple drag and drop functionality so you need zero web experience to build completely custom websites. They also have image search and video search tools, so dropping videos, images, text and even music takes 1 or 2 clicks at most. Check them out here: http://Webstarts.com

You can also register a domain or configure it to work with your existing domain. They make it really simple and provide everything: hosting, domain registration, tons of templates to choose from, images, videos, etc... I've never found anything out there quite like it. It's pretty powerful, and at the same time super easy to use.

There are hundreds of front end web design programs.
They are made for the "non-skilled" programmer.
The resulting code, when you look at it with notepad, is unmaintainable, messy and incomprehensible!
It will take you a few days to learn the basics of Dreamweaver, but you will never learn to CODE, while using notepad (the simplest editor you can get), you will learn to write code properly (and in LESS time).
Dreamweaver will give you heck of problems if you need forms or access a database.
Notepad? A few proper lines of code will do the trick.
And, since you write the code directly, you know where the variables are and what they mean. You can't with front end!

The biggest disadvantage is that directly editing any web language gives far more flexibility, there are hundreds of coding features and tricks that no tool can use. I also find hand coding faster.
