First of all, i'm sorry bout my english.
There are a few reason for cat's collars have bells on them.
1) If you lost your cat in your house, the bell helps you to find your cat when he/she moves.
2) Bells prevent to step on your cat while you are running or walking around your cat. (The cat might be static, look out of your cat ;) )
3) Cats walk really quite. If you are focused on something and your cat snuggles to you, your cat horrifies you, unless your cat hasn't got a collar with bell.

I hope that i could give the right answers for your question. Take care yourself.

I always thought the bells were to find at a given moment where the cat was? Sometimes they like to go under the sofa and such, and the bells help.

To tinkle and give warning to birds that a predator is stalking them.Cats usually creep up gradually and then pounce. As the first rapid movement cause the bell to sound the bird has a couple of split seconds to make it's escape.Without this brief warning they might well have become another victim.

It's actually a cruel joke. It's really a Dinner Bell for a Dog!

I love my cats and I love my dogs, but, no way would I put a bell on my cats especially with the Coyotes and critters where I live.

The first answer, from Max H is correct. For outdoor cats, it's a way of warning birds, squirrels, chipmunks and any other small wildlife. Some people use them for indoor cats too - to keep track of the pesky buggers. (I should probably do so too; my cat has learned to open doors by turning door knobs. seriously. LOL)

Because it is a little known fact that cats are trying to kill all humans and rule the world. When they have bells on, we hear them coming!

To warn birds etc when they are coming. I hate my cats having them so I take them off. It must be awful for them to have the noise of the bell in their ears all day.

i like that ideal, someone stole my cat a few weeks ago and someone stole my dog this past weekend so if i get another cat i'll make sure he/she will have a collar with a bell on them.

I specifically bought one like this because my cat would always run in front of me or suddenly jump near me and startle the heck out of me. I nearly stepped on him several times so I bought a collar with a bell so he wouldn't surprise me anymore. It works for me...although it's probably not as much fun for him. :)
