My best friend would love to get into Notre Dame or UNLV. She is not sure if she can make it because in 9TH Grade and in Junior High, she didn't do to well. Ever since 10TH Grade, she has being doing great and she is in 11TH now. If she keep's her grade's up, by senior year, will she be able to make it into those University's? What does it take to get into them? Thank you!

First year of high school never dooms anyone from college...Its the junior and senior year that they look at most...If she has at least a 3.0 GPA overall, she should have a very good chance at getting in to Notre Dame...and if she gets into Notre Dame, she would get in to UNLV...Notre Dame is private, which is tougher to get into...UNLV is a public school...

Ok, first off do not get bent on jumping right into Notre Dame and UNLV right after high school. Entrance into any such university is often very competitive. I would recommend that your friend visit both of their websites. They know where their bread is buttered, they will give you information on their entrance requirements. You must also be aware that sometimes the entrance requirements differ between programs as well. The websites for UNLV and Notre Dame are unlv.edu and nd.edu. If your friend finds that she can't get in as is, then that's when you mobilize plan B. Have her go to community college, get her General Education requirements out of the way and some major courses as well, then she can jump in as a transfer student. One big key to success is to keep your GPA up as high as possible. This will play a key role in entrance. Finally realize that all dreams and goals take work, and sometimes have to be approached from different angles before ultimately succeeding. Good luck!

Your best friend needs to do a little more research. She has picked two schools which are totally different from each other in almost every way.

Notre Dame is a private, elite school mainly for for the academically gifted children of wealthy Catholic families. The very large majority of all students there are Catholic, and the school is known for being very loyal to its alumni (by a strong preference for admitting children of alumni). The average ND student has a very good GPA and SAT score, and probably is a long time fan of ND football. ND is in a small town in the midwest. There is no 'nightlife' there.

UNLV on the other hand is a public university located in a city that is definitely not famous for being religious! It is not academically selective and does not have anything like the posh tradition of ND. Where ND is famous around the world, UNLV is mainly famous in Nevada. On the other hand, if your friend is a Nevada resident, UNLV is going to cost just a small fraction of what ND costs.

You friend really needs to go through the college search program at princetonreview.com to try to get a better feel for what college might match up with her academic skills, her ideas about what kind of college she wants to go to, and what college she could get into.

There is a right college for every capable student, but you need to do some research to find it.
