Take for example the Pirates of the Caribbean main theme song. How do they get the drum sections to sound so big especially on the main hit down beats between each phrase? I listen to it, and it doesn't sound like timpanis.

Yeah I know, I'm specifically talking about the music. Do they add FX in the music to give it that extra boom on the drums or is it just the mix?

All music and any effects sounds (and sometimes even the dialouge, if is fuzzy when it is shot) is added AFTER the movie is shot.
