Why don't they just give prisoners everything they need like sanitary pads/towels for the women, one snack a day for everyone across the board, and like five cigarettes a day for smokers. Why don't standardize what every prioner gets and distribute it. Most if not all prisoners are sitting in prison because of something that had to do with money. If they didn't steal it, they did something to someone in the pursuit of it. Why don't they eliminate the use of money in the whole rehabilitation process.

Ps. I am not talking about cold cash, I am talking about currency or any type of commerce.

This would be a good system for prisons that housed only lifers who would never get out.

It would be a bad system for the rehabilitation of prisoners who are there over financial issues. Obviously, they don't know how to manage money correctly, and complete alienation from all forms of currency would further impede their ability.

Thats untrue the majority of people are in the pen for drugs, which in some cases made them some currency. Taking money out of the prison system really wouldn't teach them any kind of lesson, they would just get everything they need for free. Although they have commited a crime they are still allowed and in some cases required to work in the prisons, they only get paid like .25 an hour if not worse. In turn teaching some kind of responsibility. Family can also send money, so they can call home and things like that. Even though incarcerated they are still human and in turn still need love and human contact out side of the prison. If they didn't have money they wouldn't be able to call home and this is basicly solitary confinement and I did some studying and when an inmate is confined they only become more of a threat to society. Like a caged animal, gets mean so does a human. And is only more of a threat to society in the end and with no clue how to live in the real world.

First off, prison is not a nice place. Why make it better for the prisoners if you do not want them to comeback?

Snacks? Why not add some juice or a cup of coffee sometime around 10 AM? Get real. Besides, not everybody wants, needs, or deserves snacks.

Sanitary product is a bit tougher to distribute for lots of reasons. First, the demand for the products vary from inmate to inmate. Second, everybody wants their own brand of stuff. Better to make the products available at the canteen and have the inmate buy what they want.

The only thing I would do differently would give each prisoner $10 credit at the canteen and make them earn the rest they spend there-no money coming from family on the outside.

I worked in a detention facility in Texas. The inmates were given sanitary napkins, a towel, soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, a comb, and a razor. Those are required as the minimum standard, all except the razor. As for the extras (snacks, cigarettes...) those do cost. It is because the state is not willing to pick up the cost, and neither is the taxpayer. Don't fret about the "have nots" though because while they are all still behind bars, the "haves" are still human and share amongst everyone. And their are other crimes, not just monetary ones. Don't forget about rape, abuse, neglect, and murder. You know, the crimes of passion.

They allow it as an incentive. The inmates work to earn money for personal items and snacks. They do jobs ranging from kitchen duty to secretarial type work and make anywhere from .19 an hour to a couple bucks.

If they didn't allow it, normal citizens would see a tax rate hike because of the burden this would place on society. By doing this, they are paying what little they can.

Don't know what prison you are talking about. Prisoners in the prison I am familiar with, there is no money allowed. I send money to be "on the books" to be used in the general store in prison. Limited things. Then there is the catelog that I can order stuff from for him once every 3 months as long as it is approved and doesn't weigh over 450 oz altogether. When we go to visit, he cannot even handle money to use the vending machine in the visitor room. So I don't know where you are getting your info. Hopefully you will never have to spend time ordering from one of the prisoner catelogs.

Lets see, because then TAXES would go WAY up.

We pay enough. This way, inmates and their families are at least partly responsible, and the prison/jail makes a profit.

I pay enough taxes as it is, dont need to pay more!!

because we still live in a country where everyone has rights and we respect their freedom even when they are in prison.
