The universe could be cyclically expanding, then contracting to a point and bang -- expanding all over again, forever and ever in both directions of time.
If there never was a big bang, then the marginalized bible bangers are truly superior to the legions of highly intelligent and obsessively careful last few generations of scientists working specifically in thta area.

If there was never a Big Bang, then that obviously means that the Universe has always existed as it is.
There are events happening out in the Universe that give birth to stars, black holes are one thing that serve this purpose, and there are several kinds of Black Holes. The Super Massive Black Holes, some scientists speculate, may give birth to whole Universes, and that our Universe may actually be on the other side of one.
Just because a Big Bang happened, doesn't mean that it did not occur inside of something else that had always existed.
Scientists in Japan and elsewhere are on the verge of creating REAL baby Black Holes in the lab, which leads to the possibility that even the creation of whole Universes could result from these experiments.

The nature of the universe points to the existence of a big bang. So if there wasnt one, there is no evidence to support another theory that fits the evidence,... that we can think of anyway.
The evidence in question is (basically) all the galaxies are moving away from each other - this is indisputable, based on science. If you draw their position back to a certain point, they all come from the same place.
As far as what existed before the bang, we dont know for sure. The best scientists on the planet can only speculate on the nature of the universe at about .1 second afterwards. Prior to this, the laws of physics break down, making it nearly impossible to assume what happened earlier.
At this point, religion and philosophy enter the picture and fill in the pieces.

There are different theories about this, while some say that the universe is one constant loop, it expands then contracts, that before before the last Big Bang, there was a whole other universe that has now died to pave the way for the universe we currently know.
Others say that before the Big bang, there was literally a nothingness that we will never be able to understand in our meaning of the word.
