It was fairly big, and one big hard piece of something? Maybe skin? Could it be part of my umbilical cord from birth that is just now coming off?? It was black on one side and was quite hard for him to pull out, like it was attched.

It was dirt! Some time dirt which we cannot see gets caught in those hard to reach places, such as the belly button. Try cleaning it every now and again with a cotton swob it might help

Sounds pretty scary,as a kid I had an obsession with belly button.I would think stuff was in there and would clean it constantly.Make sure you use hydrogen peroxide to fully cleanse and get any bacteria out.
