The problem is, is that the majority of Americans have no clue as to who he is! And it's sad. I'm sorry, but the hillbillies that just decide to drive in circles in stock cars, can't really even be considered good drivers. The greatest drivers ever, go, and have gone, OVER 200mph! Michael Shumacher is defiantly one of the greatest. Along side Mario Andretti, and Aryton Senna. What about all of the other great racing in the world that is not shoved down your throat like NASCAR? Like MOTOGP and World Superbike? Or even F1 and Le Mans? Sadly, the U.S. just closes their eyes to anything that isn't sponsored by Budweiser and Home Depot. Long live the true race car drivers of the world!!

Although I don't agree that Schumi is the greatest driver of all time (lack of any serious competition for most of his career being the main reason), I have to defend his record from the attack by "eyesin thedrk". As part of the Sauber Mercedes team he finished 5th at Le Mans in 1991, so we DO know how he would go in a 24hr race: very quickly!
I do agree with "eyes" that Andretti was brilliant, he'd be in my F1 top 20 of all time. However "fatboy" foyt could only be considered one of the best drivers in history by an american who stopped watching motorsport 25 years ago.

He's not the greatest because he's a dirty driver, and a cheater. Case in point: 1. Jerez 1997 when he intentionally ram in to Villeneuve. 2. 2006 Monaco GP qualifying: when he parked his car in the middle of the street to balk others from having a fair chance to beat his time.
Can an ignoble person be the greatest? I don't think so.

schmi may b a 7 time world chapion but it dose not make him the bestever driver, there is much more than just winning races nd titles. i never really saw any other drivers b4 schumi but u need to go back to the early years wiv drivers like moss, senna, stewart, evn as far back as the great fangio, i would class schumi as the best of his time but not the best ever

Its all usually a matter of opinion.
Maybe Schumacher might be the best in F1 ever (though the Juan Manuel Fangio backers will give you an argument), but best race car driver? Who knows, there really isnt a series that organizes the best drivers in each series of the world, and have them race around.

I think he is the greatest ever, but I can see why many do not share my view.
Personally, I believe people disagree about him because it is very difficult to compare drivers from different eras. Having said that, I think the greatest driver title is only a race between Schumacher, Senna and Fangio.

Schumacher may be one of the greatest F1 drivers, but can he handle a dirt sprint car or a stock car at Darlington? I wish we had a better chance to see Senna and Schumacher battle head to head more often.

All hail King Schumacher! He's the best ever and if people can't see that, they're just blind or know nuts about F1!
I miss him! He should come back!!

schumacher is the best F1 "grand prix driver" ever, but does that make him the best "driver" ever? no it doesn't,
do we know how he handles sustained 220 mph wheel to wheel racing? no we don't.
do we know how he handles 24 endurance racing? no we don't,
do we know how he handles dirt circuit racing? no we don't, do we know how he handles off road rallies? no again,
how about 1/4 mile drag racing? nope
see the links below to see what makes the best "driver"
and who knows he might be the best, but until he proves it we will never know
