In cricket, a batsman has to decide the appropriate angle he must hit up in order to hit a six (homerun in baseball).

There is also a lot of math into the whole concept of swing bowling and reverse swing.

In theory, math is everywhere in sports. The angle at which a bat meets a baseball, the spin of the ball, the friction of the surface of the ball in the air, and against the bat, the amount of energy that is lost as the ball and bat impact. In theory billiards is pretty heavily on geometry, with angles of deflection. Same with hockey. Basketball is a game of trajectories. So is football. Swimming, through the use of fluid dynamics, is pretty math-based.

But the athlete probably doesn't have the time, or the inclination, or even the capacity to analyze the mathematical theory behind what he or she does. Athletes know what works for them. Those who are good at what they do are probably not good at what they do because of any mathematical expertise. They've just found what works for them and have learned to repeat it.

I was talking to a guy the other day about triathlons, specifically physical preparation with respect to swimming. He said he was at peak efficiency as far as forestalling oxygen debt according to a sports doctor. Now there had to be some math involved in that deduction. He doesn't know the math. He doesn't think about the math. His heart pumps. His lungs do their thing. the cells utilize oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide. And I, don't believe he even thinks about it during an event.

In practice, math is probably limited to use in scoring, statistics, and salaries.

How about keeping score. You have to add by one each time someone scores.
In billiards, hitting the cue ball at an angle to hit another ball require geometry.
