I'm ordering a cell off of Ebay, I've never had one before..So when I get it..does my mom have to get a plan for it or what..? idk

your not dumb.. =) hehe either young, or cute.. well depends what cell phone u get, if its one like tmobile or cingular. which carry sim cards, if you already have a plan just switch your sim card to the new phone, if you dont id suggest to go look at some plans first cuz you usually get a new phone with a contract, try getting Cingular its been pretty good. if its a verizon phone, they dont carry sim cards so youd have to take it to get it activated, and they charge a fee.. sometimes to much, do a little more reaserch to see what will suit you best, =) good luck

Well, yes you most certainly need a plan. You have to first however, figure out what type of cellphone you have. There are two types of cell phones out there, GSM and CDMA
GSM:
Every poster so far has brought up SIM cards, which is what GSM providers use to store your account information, contacts, and other information. In these phones you insert a little, memory-card-like device into your phone to make it work. Just to name a few carriers that use this,
Cingular, T-Mobile, tracephone...
CDMA:
In these phones you do not need a SIM card to operate the phone. Once you get it activated, you are good to go. A few carriers that use this are
Verizon, Sprint, helio....
In either case you will have to visit a store to get it activated with a plan.
To help figure out what kind of phone the seller is offering, pay close attention to the description and if it does not say what kind, then I would email the seller.
I don't know if this would apply to GSM phones(I use CDMA), but since you are ordering the phone off of Ebay, I would ask whoever is selling the phone for what is called an ESN number. Take that number to your parents and have them call whatever cell phone company is branded on the phone so that they can make sure the number is "clean". If it is not, you will not be able to use the phone and the listing is most likely just a scam.

you can activate it on your mother's acct.
Or you will have to get an acct and then activate the phone.
