Today I caught my dog eatting off my dinner plate while i was in another room. Normally when he misbehaves I'm usually quick to slap him around the face area. I have never seen this as animal abuse since I'm only disfusing the situation. I caught a glimpse of this animal police show and now i'm wondering if slapping him is wrong. Would maybe a belt or cord be better?

- Hitting is the only thing that seems to make him understand.

- I don't usually hit him full force.

- We are all animals. This is how animals acted.

- Belt or cord would dehumanize the effect.

A mother dog will nudge or act like they are biting their pups. I've never seen a dog or any other animal hit one another as a form a discipline. Hitting a dog only makes them afraid of your hand so when you try to pet or help him, he'll think you're just gonna cause him more pain. And one of these days, he's gonna fight back then what will you do?
I just watched a show on Animal Planet called "It's me or the dog". They had an unruly, bully of a siberian husky. The way the trainer stopped his bad behavior was by moving him to another area for a short period of time, using loud noises & restraining with a leash. Never did they hit him. Maybe you should learn what to do before you continue to hurt (abuse) this poor dog & if you can't stop yourself from abusing him, put him in another home. You don't deserve him.

I can't believe you would actually hit your poor innocent dog. Dogs don't know if it is your dinner or theirs. They smell food, they want it, they get it. I wouldn't eat in front of my pets without giving them some too. I would feel sorry for them.
A toddler doesn't know when something is poisonous so you keep it away from them. You don't leave it where they can reach it and then slap them. It was your fault for leaving it within his reach. Never hit an animal.
Would you prefer a slap in the face with a hand or with a belt or a cord?

Don't go from one extreme to another. Keep your hands to youself. You should keep dry dog food out for your dog 24/7. It should be pretty fresh and clean. Dogs that steal food are not being satisfied with either the taste or quite possibly the amount he is receiving. He wants what you have because he loves you and he obvously feels he needs it. You can beat him everyday but he wo'nt change. It's you who needs to do the changing. Heres what I do; I am a single mom with 3 little boys and a very energetic Jack Russel. If anyone should have bad table manners, he should. I don't have the time to stay on his *** all the time so what I do is make my everyday actions count. He always has food at hs disposal. I by bentiful because it has different flavors throughout the bag. I would get bored if I had to eat the exact same thing everyday. I give him can food about every other day. I give him 2 chopped up hotdogs with chedder spinkled generously on top a couple times a week and I feed him same time we eat. On leftovers night he eats after we do but ne waits patiently without begging. I believe this is because he never worries about going hungry. Often he does'nt get anything except for his dry which is always there for him. Yes he gets intrested at times about what the kids left behind or what it is I am eating and I know if I leave it on a short table or on my bed he going to get it. It part of the game. We just need to keep it out of reach when unattended. But there are those poochies who violate the forbidden "counter top." The Rebel can be delt with, without having to physically punish them. That is so not cool. Did you know a sqirtgun works quite lovely. It has the element of surprise from a distant yet you get a satisfaction like you physically got your point across. How about an old type of squeeze horn ( like a clown uses ). Catching your dog doing something he ain't suppose to be has never been so much fun. So, do you get that your question was appaulling? I sure hope I helped.

Much to my disgust... my dad is the same. He doesn't hit around the face... only slaps her on the bum.. it is only when she has done something REALLY bad, like steal food from the table. She is an adult dog and well trained so she knows it is wrong. I go off and cry or don't talk to my dad in days so he's pretty much stopped doing it now.

I take it that you're joking about the belt or cord question?

You have to trying to getting a reponse in a really sick way. I hope this isn't a real question.....If an animal sees food on the table--his instincts say FOOD-ME. He can't reason and think, gosh if I eat my MASTERS food, I will get slammed.
My dog ate a bag of lasagna off the table tonite. What did I do? I should have relised is I left it there he would smell it and eat it, so I learned keep the human food up high. I won't say anymore, I am so angry, because you will probaly get po-ed and kick the dog. For heavan's sake man, I hope you don't have kids. Take an anger management class. Thi question has made me really sad.

How would you feel if someone hit you in the face or used a belt or cord on you!! Of course this is animal abuse. If the dog was trained properly from the start he wouldn't be doing this so I would say the dog's actions are the fault of you!!!!

you can use all kinds of body language to communicate with a dog without using a belt or cord. why would you leave a plate of food around and not expect to have the dog eat it? no offense but its your problem not the dogs problem. slapping a dog or hitting him with a belt or cord is abuse. it is completely unnecessary.

There is NEVER a time when you should ever hit your animal. If you are needing to get their attention when they have done something bad, I suggest getting a newspaper, roll it up and smack your hand with it. Some people use this on the animal too. A very light, I mean VERY light tap on the animals behind will get you excellent results without harming them. The loud noise of the newspaper will scare them plenty and let them know that they are in trouble.

First of all, how would you feel if you were just trying to get some food and you got slapped for it. You didn't know that you were doing anything wrong, but you still got slapped, not sounding so good, huh? You can spray him with a water bottle, get a shock collar, or grab him (gently) by the skin on the back of his neck to get his attention. Never hit your dog. Do you want them to be afraid of you? I don't think so. Never ever ever ever ever hit your dog.
