That is normal. Unless the temperature is etremely cold, you are wasting your time trying to warm up the engine.

The new duramax's are fine to jump in and start driving as long as it's not freezing out and you don't do it every day. I recently left a job as a salesman for chevy, but before that I worked at the same dealership moving and driving the vehicles all over the state. It was very common for someone to order a truck that needed aftermarket work done to it. As soon as it arrived (right off the truck), we would jump in and drive it an hour or more without giving it a second to warm up. And this was in Connecticut where it was often 30 degrees or less. I know that is poor practice and doing that to any deisel on a regular basis will significantly shorten the life of the motor, but my point is that once in a while will not effect it at all.

No i would not worry about any damage to the motor the way the vehicle is set up it will not upshift the transmission in certain situations like when it is cold because it uses the engine rpm to warm up faster. And will return to normal as it achieves operating temperature.

Letting your motor idle for long periods of time can put extra wear and tear on the motor. It's important to keep the RPM's low when your motor is under the normal operating temperature.

Keep doing that and you will be replacing the injector pump for one, glow plugs, and control module.

Yes its bad to jump in a diesel and drive off without it warming up. Diesel engines operate best when they are warm that's why people tend to leave them running more often than turning them off.

Wake up a few minutes earlier and warm up your truck.
