I'm just getting back into reading comic books after almost a 20 year hiatus. I've started with the new Omega Flight (since I was once a diehard Alpha Flight fan) and am interested in catching up on the events of House of M and Civil War.

Can anyone tell me what titles/issue #'s would make a good starting point?

pick up the trade paperbacks...

1)avengers disassembled
2)house of m
3)new avengers volume one through four
4)spiderman the other
5)civil war the illumanati
6)civil war

these ten books cover pretty much every big event in marvel over the past few years. secret war was another big storyline that shook things up but it wasnt very good so i cant give it a big recommendation.

I would get The Amazing Spiderman issues that lead into the Civil War as he's a major plot line plus I think you'll enjoy the storyline between Peter Parker & Tony Stark ( very cool ) also check out Civil War: Casualties of War & The Confession.

For Marvel's Civil war storyline, pick up the one issue prequel, which was called "Civil War Illuminati"- it had Doctor Strange, Iron Man, Namor, Reed Richards etc on the cover.

Civil War:Frontlines is a good series. The Black Panther and Punisher War Journal have behind the scenes plots.(stuff you didn't see in the CW series)
