Basically, an external hard drive is one which has it's own power supply. An external drive has several advantages, one is it's portability and can be connected to different PCs and it can be used to store information that can be connected to another pc without enabling a LAN/network setup, unless you purchase an external networked hdd. Most hard drives can be placed into a case, the case only costs about A$50. It is particularly useful if you have different PCs that have different capabilities. I use my external on a pc with software that runs on XP, then connect it to a pc that runs vista. This is mainly for video editing. The other important thing is that an external hdd doesn't need to be turned on unless you want to access files on it. An internal drive or drives are switched on when the pc is turned on and you have no ability to power them down. In fact, an internal and external drive are EXACTLY the same. A few people comment that internals are faster, but this is a fallacy. It's faster if you replace the new internal harddrive with a bigger and faster model. If you buy the same drives of the same capacity, brand and memory cache, there is no difference at all. The only difference that affects the drives performance is the data transfers that needs to go through the USB ports or firewire ports. There is where the bottle necks are, but on normal applications you won't notice the apparent slow down. That is why video editing is done through firewire and external storage. I know some manufacturers sell external drives but nowadays you can buy a separate case for them and use the connections that suit your pc, eg. USB or firewire. The inside hard drive is just the same as the ones found in a pc case. There are now external eSATA that connect the hdd directly to the motherboard, hence the difference would be negligible.

The only major difference is with an internal hard-disk you can't move it around. But, with an external hard-drive you can carry it along with you.
However, note that an internal hard-drive works much much faster than an external hard-drive.

Yes, there are external Hard Disk enclosures available in the market, with USB or FireWire interfaces, that you can use to make use of your internal hard disk as an external one.

You can't install an OS on an external hard disk (or can you?) otherwise it's not recommended. So, weather you chose an external hard disk, you still need an internal one.

Looking for answer internal or external hardisk, all depend how do you use it. If u wanna carry anywhere u go and easy transfer from 1 pc with another then get an external hardisk.
It cost more.
As for internal hardisk basically it like your original hard in your pc. Guess you all ready know. Plus it cost less.
So all depend how u think it suitable for u to full use it.
:P Good Luck

I would suggest you internal hard disk cuz it easier and faster well if you have to move documents from one place to another than external is good. I prefer both.

Internals tend to be faster, do not need another wall wart in your power strip and take up infinitely less desk space. (i.e. none)
However, as soon as you want to move that drive the externals have an almost total advantage. You may not think that you need a 320 GB, mains powered, physically over sized memory key, but if you want to backup several different computers, or if you want to take all your photos or videos with you then a 4GB key is not going to be any good.

Internal one if you don't plan on moving it a whole bunch, and they're generally faster. But the external if you plan on moving from one computer to another!
