You don't. There is no such thing as a grant to start your own business. About three quarters of all grants that the U.S. government hands out every year are in healthcare and education. Generally, most of the grants go to universities and university-affiliated research organizations; some go to state and local governments; very few, to for-profit businesses; almost none, to individuals. There are TONS of grants out there waiting for people to grab them. The thing is, you have to fulfill the grant requirements.

There are a LOT of grant websites out there ("Personal Finance 101 - A Beginner's Guide" found on Amazon.com or www.goldenRocFinancial.com) has a great list of resources. There are government websites where you can find out that information, too. Google "grants for business" and you'll get hundreds, if not thousands, of hits.

Most grants for businesses are for specific things, such as research in highly technical areas or medical research or alternative energy, etc.

BEWARE: Make sure that you don't buy "Grant Kits" or anything like that. You'll be wasting your money for something that you can easily find out for yourself.

When applying for a grant, follow the instructions to the letter. If you don't, you will likely be disqualified from the selection process.

If you want FREE or low-cost resources for starting and running a business, check out the Small Business Administration (www.sba.gov) and your local Service Corp of Retired Executives (SCORE--www.score.org). They have free counselling, low cost classes on starting and running a business, low cost loans, and much, much more.
