I read a variety of books The authors I'm hooked on at the moment are Robin Cook who's books are all about the medical field the only one of his books I was disappointed with was Contagion. Lisa Jackson is another favorite of mine her's are under the romance/thriller category the romance isn't detailed but has a little detail to sex in it but not all into it in a gross way. James Patterson, john Saul & dean koontz have awesome books

for some sci fi books try Dune by Frank Herbert...there are several other books in the series and from what I remember the next 2 books are ok then it bombs out...I see a new book has been added too....but definately try Dune...I spent a lot of the time reading the appendices in order to understand things, but its a really engrossing read!!
For another book action NOT sci fi...try Shogun by James Clavell...a great read that hooked me from the first few pages! I loved this book!!! Its a real classic and incredibly interesting (reminds me I have to read it again!!).
I also enjyed the Dan Brown books...Angles and Demons is the book before the Da Vinci code and is a good read.

Debra Doyal and James MacDonald's 'Mage War" series start with "The Gathering Flame."
Lois McMaster Bujold's 'Vorkosigan' series is another good read. A good place to start with is "Shards Of Honor."
"Dune" by Frank Herbert is a classic of sci-fi, but his son, Brian, has done considerable work on the prequels. You can either start with the original "Dune" or the "Butlerian Jihad" series.
"Ender's Game" by Orson Scott Card is a good one for younger readers and not too bad for adults either.
Robert Heinlein is my personal favorite sci-fi writer, so I saved him for last. He has three titles I think are must reads by today's standards. "Stranger In A Strange Land" is a fascinating look at how we live as seen from an outsider-a human raised on Mars by Martians. "Friday" tells the story of a corperate courier carrying top secret files in a hidden compartment in her stomache and contains lots of near future possiblities. However, Heinlein's most remarkable book has to be "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress." The moon has been turned into a penal colony that grows food to help feed the population of Earth. Manny is a computer repair tech who has discovered that the main computer system is alive. When Manny crosses paths with a young revolutionary, the question bebome "Is the computer smart enough to win the rebellion?" "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress" was published in 1966 and Heinlein seemed to forsee lots of stuff we see in today's computers.

Look up the author Stephen King.
He's got a lot of good sci-fi & horror books, a lot of which have been turned into films like Secret Window, Cujo, and The Shining.
Personally, I've only read The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon (which was kind of weird) and The Talisman (which is very sad).

A while ago someone turned me onto a series by Jacqueline Carrey called "Kuschiels" there are four book out now (Kuschiels Dart, Kuschiels Avatar, Kuschiels chosen and Kuschiels Scion). the sth one Kuschiels Justice is being released in June. I preordered this book back in January hopeing that it would be released sooner. It is a most awesome series. One that I have read twice and probably will re-read all of them again prior to reading the 5th book. My daughter is into the series also. It is a most awesome read. I hope that you enjoy it.

You will have to dig to find them, because most of his books are long out of print, but H. Beam Piper was the best science fiction author I know about.
Jose Philip Farmer is a fine storyteller as well. I highly recommend his River World series.
Robert Henlein is a great science fiction author, I especially recommend his Lazarus Long series of books.
