Personally I think I want to stick with traditional but stand out type of names. I've considered Catherine, Christina, Britney (not lately), Ginger, Diana, Madonna (for a middle name), Venus, Athena, (after the goddesses), and I think Paris is a beautiful name if you think of the city and the trashy heiress, lol. And that's girls names. What's your choices?

Oops, "not the trashy heiress"

I just thought of something for a girl, London or England instead of Paris or go weird and name her Scotland. LOL For guys I like the names William, Mark, and Paul. Mark-Paul would be kind of cool, reminds of my first crush and besides, he's the only guy I heard of with a name like that.

I agree with you on traditional names.
I think if I have a child, I will give she/he a standard name.
Think of it this way...Will we ever have a president named "Rusty" "Kaylee" "Dusty" "Brody" "Jayden" ?
Names like Katherine, Elizabeth, Josephine, Eleanor they all have a classic beauty about them. They bring to mind Successful women of strong character.
David, Jonathan, Aaron make me think of determined, successful men.

Usually when you pick the traditional names, everyone tends to make nicknames for them: Catherine=Cathy, Christina=Christy, Britney=Brit, Diana=Di, Madonna=Donna...etc. which totally defeats the purpose of picking the beautiful name in the beginning. The goddess names I really like, they sound so mythical! My friend got a puppy, a Siberian Husky and named her Paris. It's a very nice name, but it just reminds me of the "trashy heiress!"
If I have a daughter I would like to name her Hazel Nicole, or Skylar Renee...something a little different!

Hmm or there are other places besides Europe with interesting names : Brooklynn, Dallas, Austin, Charlotte...etc.

Catherine
Elizabeth

Kaitlyn is a more modern Catherine with basically the same nicknames. I prefer the more traditional names as Venus is a cute kid name, but not really a professional name for later in life. It kind of sounds like a stripper name and I wouldn't vote for, or buy a house from a Venus.

Just stick to the 3-2-1 rule (meaning one name has 3 syllables, one name has 2 and one has 1...it doesn't have to be in that order) and you'll have a future Governor on your hands.

I lke the mix of unusual and traditional as it gives the child the option later in life of going by their more "normal" middle name if they so choose. My cousin (who grew up with me and is like a little sister) named my nephews
Demytri Robert
Ashir William
Izac James

I would recommend staying away from names with possibly unsavoury connotations or connections, such as Paris ('cause that makes me think of the sleezy no-talent heiress) or Britney, or names that can be shortened to something really mean! I love the name Ginger (although for me, that name will always belong to a very goofy dog who loved to steal peaches from the family fruit tree!)

I tend to like more traditional names myself but go for names that are not currently popular but might have been more than 50 years ago. I knew quite a few Catherines and Dianas when I was growing up but I would consider using them today because they are not so popular. They're not names that are currently trendy nor are they sort of invented names that suddenly became popular and then disappeared.

HAHA! I thought Conner was an uncommon name, until another Conner was born in the room next to mine in the hospital thirty minutes later. He also has another Connor in his class. Biggest bummer is people misspell his name all the time. I'd avoid famous names like Paris if they have an unsavory reputation. That will follow your child whether you want it to or not. Kids are really mean to each other in school. Look back through your family tree. You'll likely find traditional names that are uncommon now.

I love the names Riley and Ryan for a girl. I want to name my son (when I have one) Preston after my grandfather. I like names that are not the usual, but not really far out there. However, I also love some traditional names. Nicole, Emma, Nicholas and James are favorites as well.

A mix between Traditional and unusual is what we wanted for our children... And we did.
My husband and I picked three names for each child. The first names are kind of old, but a few are coming back now...The middle name is the same for all of them, because of a promise I made (I'm an every mass Catholic)... It's Maria for girls and Mario for the boys.
The third names are all Italian, beacuse they are strong names and his grandma is Italian: Antonella and Ines for the girls (being Ines my grandma's); Antonio and Alfredo the boys.

Personally I like going with family names.
Naming trends go in cycles and if you name your children after family or very close friends, then there is always a reason behind their name.
When kids grow up, they like to know why you chose their name, and "it sounded good" or "it was trendy" are just not good reasons.

So, while names like Sarah, Anne, Martin, or Peter may seem "old-fashioned", they have importance behind them that can stick no matter what the trends may be.

I did name my daughter something unusual - Melissande Promise - but we have a very common nickname for her, Lissa.

Other names I considered, Victoria, Andera, Jasmina, and Marissa.

For boys I considered Nicolai James and Xavier James. Now I like the names Honor and Merit for boys.

I like unusual names for the individuality, but I hate fad names. I also don't like the idea of naming a child after anyone I know, because I want them to have their own personality and not feel like they have to be like anyone else in the family.
