First of all one would need a means of breaking through the ozone layer. This vessel would require the ability to perform under intense pessure, heat and cold and the ability to travel fast.
Aside from the vessel needed to get one into space, one would need to be equipped with the proper materials to protect their body from "space". This "suit" would need to be temperature controlled and powerful enough to not break under pressure.
It would also be essential for one to be equipt with the necessary amount of oxygen to last them their entire trip.
Aside from that, a good camera and lots of memory space would be it! And a positive can do attitude :).

A large amount of money is required because of the high cost incurred in the construction of the space craft, the research that goes to improving the technology and others. Mostly, 1 billion or more is required for a successful launch. We need a heat proof Space craft that can withstand heavy pressure in Space. We also need sanitiation facilities that include clearing of our waste material like our feces and CO2. Exercise in space is required in Space as the lack of it will cause problems to our back. Lastly, food, water and oxygen must be provided to ensure that the astronomers lead a healthy life.

Breaking free of Earths gravity is the basic answer. This is done with rockets that use fuel to go up.
Other things that are needed for a successful spaceflight - perfect seals on the fuel, trajectory info, reason to go...
For manned spaceflight, the problems increase tenfold - perfect seals on the atmosphere, CO2 scrubbing, oxygen, food, protection from radiation, a way to land, an interface that works in zero-g.
Basically, imagine all the requirements of a navy ship. Then imagine making them protected from space radiation, zero gravity, the vacuum of space, the ability to land (including surviving the descent through the atmostphere - heat shielding).

An interesting necessity might be beneficial external bacteria and parasites. With space craft being sterile, we might have to introduce the helpful organisms for long space travel.
It would be a tough balancing act however as without counterbalancing agents, what was beneficial might become too numerous and deleterious to us.

Only enough speed to get past the escape velocity, which here on earth is 11.2 km/sec. Yeah, you need protection from the environment..but assuming you are going into space, that's a given

There is an old saying among pilots: "If God had meant for Man to fly, he would have given us more money."
That goes double (or triple) for space travel âº

Because we are a very curious specie. Because we know about the progress due to our curiosity, or the disadvantages due to the lack of curiosity.
The human curiosity is the motor of the sciences, techniques, and progress.
