A male to female transsexual cannot have a period. Despite being able create a functional and convincing vagina with surgery, there is no way to get a female reproductive tract.

On a hormonal level some male to female transsexuals do imitate a natural woman's monthly cycle. (by lowering or dropping the estrogen at one point in the month and adding progesterone.) Some doctors believe this aids in breast development but there's really no proof and many many people do just fine without ever subjecting themselves to this. A male to female transsexual doing this could get the emotional and some of the physical effects of PMS, but still wouldn't really have a period.

A female to male transsexual obviously starts out with periods, but hormone therapy will eventually halt them. Part of the typical surgery for female to male transsexuals is to get a hysterectomy, after which they will not get a period even if they stop taking testosterone.

Gary you can kiss my florescent white Irish ***.
Your just pissed because you come from Reno, and you can't even landa job as a bellman in Circus Circus. Poor pathetic little puppy. :) I pity you. I truly do.

Sorry, back to the question:
If you are changing from a female to a male, yes you can get periods.
If you are transitioning from male to female, no. Because you don't have ovaries.
Although, judging from your Avatar, you are a male, so I'm guessing you were born female?
On that note, if you are pre-op (before having the actual sex change from a vagina to a penis) than you can get your period.
Also, if you are a female-male transsexual, once you start taking male hormones, your body will stop haveing a menstruation period shorty there after.
However, even if you are born female, as soon as you have the sex change from a vagina to a penis, you cannot have a mentration cycle anymore, because yu wouldn't have a vagina.
I know allot about this kind of stuff, I am a gay but my brother is a post-op transsexual, and you can feel free to email me if you want to know something.

If I had to take a stab at it, I would say no...Menstruation is basically a shedding away of the uterine lining and unfertilized egg. I know there is major hormonal manipulation going on but I don't think that aspect of womanhood can be recreated. Trust me...periods SUCK...you're lucky!

Are you serious???. You were born a male, you don't have female reproductive system, EG fallopian tubes, womb, overies, so on and so on. If that were the case why is it that men can't have babies??. even if you were to get a sex change operation that still won't change anything, all that does is change the apperance of your genitals to those of a woman.

I'm pretty sure they can't. You can change your genetalia but ovaries are kind of hard to come by. The thing is that girls are born with all the eggs they'll ever have, so when people get sex change operations they don't really have any eggs. I don't think it's really possible.

One thing.. you won't be able to produce children. Your DNA will still read XY. But you won't have periods. So the answer is no.

No. You can only have periods if you have a uterus and ovaries. Good luck to you on your journey.
