What is the use of trignometry and logarithms in the present day world?

Trigonometry is handy for all sorts of things. I built an atrium for a friend, and used trig in the design. The cypress tree in my back yard is just over 100 feet tall. The great circle distance between any two points is given by a simple trig formula. When I am navigating my airplane, I use trig to get the direction to go. Logarithms are less useful; they show up in physics and chemistry fairly frequently, but in the ordinary world have been mostly replaced by the scientific calculator.

The only people I know that use trigonometry and logarithms on a regular basis are architects and people like my ex who designs robotics hardware. Specialized yes, but still used in the modern world.

Don't know why you have to learn it in high school though. I didn't understand that then, and still don't.

That's been my question ever since they were part of our curriculum many years ago. I have NEVER used them since, even though I've worked in a number of technological industries.

Trig and logs are used everywhere in science and engineering. I've even seen logs in business.
