Because John Wilkes Booth was a Confederate sympathizer, albeit while being an actor in Washington during the war.

John Wilkes Booth wanted to take over the government from the ***** sympathizers. He got Lincoln, but was too high on life to get Seward (the Secretary of State) or Johnson (VP). Johnson ended up screwing himself. Too bad Mr. Booth wasn't around to see that.

And because he thought he was doing a favor for all the angry southerners who had just lost the war.

Cause somebody thought he should have been running the country instead of watching a movie....I don't know. Anti-government whackos have always existed. Maybe he wanted fame, maybe he didn't like that the slaves were freed.
