À la carte (also à la carte) is a French expression meaning "from the menu", and it is used in restaurant terminology in one of two ways:

It may refer to a menu of items priced and ordered separately rather than selected from a list of preset multi-course meals at fixed prices (see Table d'hôte).
Or it may designate the option to order a main course item alone that is otherwise served with a side or starter dish, such as soup or salad.

instead of a fixed menu, you may choose your menu according to your wish for a la carte menu you pay only for the items desired!

There is a bunch of stuff available, and you can pick whatever you want. Kind of like a buffet, but you usually have to pay for everything separately with a la carte.

"Take one of each type" At a resturant you choose one appitizer, meat, starch, vegie and desert. The same with making choices for instance configuring a computer choose an OS, processor, ramm, optical drive, hd, etc
