My teacher told me the novel is a satiric and Candide mocks fun some of the important issues in history.
And that in order to fully understand the story, I need to know what he's mocking fun of first.
So what are some of things I need to make sure that I know before reading the novel?
Thanks

Voltaire mocks the philosopher Leibniz and his philosophy that everything is for the "best of all possible worlds." This extremely optimistic stand of the philosopher is mirrored by the character Pangloss in the novel as you will probably read in the opening chapters. Candide witnesses a lot of experiences which makes him question the validity of what his tutor, Pangloss' says. The theme will be clearer as you read the novellete. Good luck :)

I dont think you need to know anything first. I think you should just start reading it and if you come across something you dont understand, take the time to look it up. You should do fine. It is a beautiful story - and get the CD from the play and listen to the music too. It's beautiful. Cultivate your own garden. Pax - C

A good idea is to use the translation from Penguin books. It is heavily footnoted to give you the backround you need.
