The biggest problem is Windows ME. It is a horrible mess of an operating system and is no longer supported (no security updates, patches, etc.). However, if you tried to upgrade to Windows XP, you would HAVE to buy another computer, a 6 year old computer just wouldn't have what it takes to run it.
You COULD run Linux on a 6 year old computer, but you would have to know a little bit about what you were doing, as you probably wouldn't be able to use the more funtional desktop GUIs (Graphical User Interface). However, Linux has the advantage of being free.
I recommend that you buy the most powerful new or secondhand computer you can afford to future-proof yourself a little. A new computer will most likely come with XP or Vista. A secondhand computer can have whatever you want on it (again I would recommend Linux, but that's just me).
Windpws XP support will stop soon too.

I have had a couple computers over the past six years. The first of which had ME. That is the worst OS ever. It was bad enough to convince me that I really wanted a Mac. I agree with several other posters here. Look at a second hand computer or low to mid range new system. Recycle the old hardware sans hard drive, and put the old hard drive in an enclosure and format it. You will have extra storage, or a disk to back up important files. Do not just format and sell the computer. There will still be personal data on it that could be extracted by a person who has the knowlege and software to do so.

They are all large problems, but what the computer is used for defines which is the largest. Most likely a 6 year old computer running ME is not being used to play games, download large video files and most other modern broadband purposes. Getting a faster internet connection will not necessarily make your internet experience faster, especially on such an old computer running such an awful operating system.
I would say the biggest problem is the 6 year old computer, because with a newer computer you will get a newer OS, so the ME issue will go away. Once you have a computer and OS that will enable you to enjoy broadband content, then replacing dial-up will be a high priority.

Wow, you've got the trifecta of bad computer experience. The only thing that would top it off is if you had an eMachines. I WOULD upgrade if you could, there will be some great deals in July. As far as the 6 year old computer, you can clean it up, remove the spyware and junk programs and it'll tide you over till july. As far as dial up, youre gonna have to upgrade soon. But until then People PC, NetZero and Earthlink will give you a way better experience than AOell.

all of the above.
ME was bill gates revenge on the world but it did have two good things
1) system restore introduced
2) made a large ready market for windows xp users
You are probably better off with windows 98 se than me .
Freezes. However there many not be drivers for your peripheals easily had - sound card , etc etc
- dial up is primitive now . Once you get high speed you will see why
- your computer is probably ok.
the problem is unless you know people who have parts parts prices for the old stuff - ram etc are exhorbitant

Wow, Windows ME is the worst OS ever, 6 year old computer can be upgraded memory-wise or a new mother board, but the dial up, man that is slow. So, keep the computer, add memory until you have 512 mb (2x256 ~ they have to match) and deal with the dial up until you can get dsl or cable.

If me is running good on your 6 year old computer, then I would say dial-up connection. I just got rid of a computer that was running me, it was still running good, but I wanted a new one, so I gave my computer running me, to a girl who did not have much, and she says it is still working good..Good Luck..
