It all depends on how much of a jerk the guy doing the interviews wants to be. Most of the times they'll specify what format to send in the resume`, sometimes they won't. While EVERYONE has the capability to read PDF files (because the reader is free from adobe), most companies perfer for you to use Word or another program that can save in word (.doc) format. I asked an interviewer that question once, and he said it was because the company saw using Microsoft Word as "more professional". Which I think is funny since Word does all the work for you with their resume wizard, yet the resume it produces is of very low quality. If you're unsure I'd call the company and ask them.

While it is ok to send resume as PDF it is not preferred so I would stick to the doc format. I've recently submitted a resume in PDf and they requested doc. So moral of story is to give them the doc format unless they want another format.

You should have copies of your resume in multiple formats. If the ad specifies .PDF, or Word, or plain unformatted text you should have a copy ready to send.
If they specify something other than PDF but you send a PDF they will say you can't follow directions and immediately discard your resume.

You should send it as a Word attachment because sometimes the HR staff write things over the resumes (believer or not), before they send it to some one else in the same department, i.e. the HR assistant manager reads all the resumes and then makes notes to his/her boss for each one with their opinion or recommendation in the front of the resume.

No. It is not good. Bcoz to open PDF files u need Adbe sources and ppl in the company looking for ppl wont like to consider PDF files and prefer Word files. Why not go for Word attachment. Its various features are unavailable in PDF and PDF crashes and may disturb ur life too.
