two side notes
first she lives in the country dsl is like $50 since their is only one company out their that offers it.

second the modem turns the analog in to digital. thats why they call it a modem it turns it in to digital for the pc and then back in to analog for the phone line.

Very easy
But you would have a slow shared connection.
Turn on internet sharing in the computer.
On the network settings in the advanced area is a setting "allow the internet from this computer to be shared"Check that

- hopefully you have a network card in the computer as well as the modem.
if not install a pci or i guess usb network card . PCI would be better.
When you share the internet ( above) you can pick which network adapter is the source ( modem) and which is the other ( network card)

plug the ethernet cable from the network card to one of the
4 lan (NOT THE SINGLE WAN PORT_)
it should not matter which one.
that should be all.
Before you set up the wireless i would attach another computer by wire into one of the other 4 lan ports or if you do the setup by wireless set it up first without encryption to get it going then you can go back.

the remote computer should have a 192.xx x ip address.

doubt you will have many drive by freedloaders.
the biggest problem with wireless by far is neighbours routers. You will get a signal strength but no internet.

simply change the channel. any will do but channels 1 and 11 are the two first choices .

No. Your wireless signal is digital, but the 56k modem is analogue. Two completely different worlds. What you need is a wireless network card. not very expensive. Then your computer would see the wireless signal.
