The song's by Led Zeppelin, and a lot of the words are supposed to have two meanings.

This is about a woman who accumulates money, but finds out the hard way her life had no meaning and will not get her into heaven. She has a house built with 2 stories and has a large stairway built from the second story towards the sky in an attempt to see heaven and talk with god. Basically all the worlds money or worldly posessions will ever get you into heaven. There are those who will forever speculate to the true meaning of the words. There are those who say it's a god message (http://www.sunsetwestproductions.com/forever/stairway.htm
Then again there are those who just openly state it's a satanic song ( http://www.michaelklassen.com/understanding-stairway-to-heaven ). Either way "Perception" will always divide the masses of people who look for meaning in the song.

While you listen to the song decide how you perceive it. There is no single answer.

On that note there is a backward version of the song also. Although this idea that Led Z! would take the time to place a satanic message is just rediculous. However if Jimmy Page had knowingly meant the song to mean a heavenly message and in turn the backward version is the satanic version I guess you could say there is no dark without light or vice versus. Check on other hidden messages on albums played in reverse. Some heavy metal songs actually have god messages. EIther way "Perception" again. Enjoy the Greatest band of all times (my prefference).

That's a good question. It seems to be just a narrative to me, like it doesn't really have a deeper meaning, it's an amazing song though.
