My computer needs more RAM. Is it true that you can use a flashdrive as RAM? I heard its only for windows vista users (which I have) with something called ReadyBoost but I dont exactly understand what that is. If it does double as RAM is all you do plug it into a USB slot? Is that IT?? I know there has to be a catch. Also if I need more hard drive space can I use the flashdrive? And finally how much do these things cost? And which brand do you recommend for a Dell E1505 Windows Vista Premium user? Thanks. By the way please dont refer me to one of those sites like new egg I'd just like an answer not a referral. Thanks in advance!

When you plug in the USB, when the window pops up the one on the very bottom says "speed up my computer with readyboost" or something close to that. Click that and it brings up a window that lets you tell the computer how much of the stick you want to use for memory.

Pretty cool.

If you don't get this option in the popup window you can right click the drive in my computer and one of the tabs is readyboost.

It caches information to the USB drive instead of the hard drive, which is faster. It is only a Windows Vista feature. I've seen little effect when using it, but the less RAM you have, the more speed you'll see. It doesn't really have the same effect as adding RAM, but every little bit counts, I guess. You need a USB 2.0 flash drive. I got a 2 gig one at Staples for around $30 or $40 on sale.

Yeah flash drives can act like RAM with Vista's Ready Boost, but its not as good as RAM. Only flash drives with fast enough transfer speeds can be used for ready boost (mine isnt fast enough for use with ready boost as its old). Your best bet is to buy some RAM instead if you have an empty slot for it.

You can use it but it slow
If you have a newer computer ( P4) etc the usb will be powered on before windows
Older computers now.
If it could be used with the price of flash memory every kid would be upping their ram in this manner.
Won't work

Yes flash drive can be used, but it is NOT as fast as ramm. t IS faster than virtual memory which would have been the alternative. You need a READYBOOST capable flash drive. NOT ANY FLASH DRIVE WILL DO. For a list of drives go to
