What does a roofer (shingle slinger) use a Hypotenuse Square for? The formula is only 1/2 of the answer.

A shingle slinger shouldn't have any use, determining the squares needed from actual roof measurements, not plan measurements and calculation.
A Hypotenuse Square is used by rafter cutters to determine the length of rafters from run and rise.
