The most I want to pay for a laptop is about 1000

Dell or HP are the best bang for the buck. The advantage to HP is that you can shop it at your local Circuit City, Best Buy, etc. and it is easy to return. Forget Dell support.

Try the Dell Inspiron E1505 (I purchased it's big brother. Recommended configuration:
Intel Core 2 Duo model T7200 processor.
2 Gigs memory.
An upgraded video card because they can't be upgraded after purchase.
My neighbor has this configuration and loves it.
Pay for a VISTA Premium DVD. This will come in handy should you need to re-install Vista in the future.
Oh yea, take the option to not load software. This keeps a ton of garbage off of your machine.

I agree, 1505 is hands down the best value on the market now. There will be a back to school push in july ALL will come down and intel will have a price reduction on July 22 that will also be passed to the public
