You'd know these things if you'd read the play.

Up to the actor, really. Othello did get the job Iago expected to. But I doubt that fully explains why Iago does what he does.

No, Iago doesn't feel sorry for what he does in the play. He's one of Shakespeare's great villians. Why would he?

"Chief among Iago’s reasons for this hatred is Othello’s recent promotion of Michael Cassio to the post of lieutenant. In spite of Iago’s service in battle and the recommendation of three “great ones” of the city, Othello chose to give the position to a man with no experience leading men in battle."

After making Othello's friends fight each other, causing Othello to demote his faithful lieutenant, Cassio, Iago plans to completely destroy Othello's life by making his suspect that his faithful and loving wife, Desdemona, is having an affair with Cassio. By subtly planting "evidence," and planting the seeds of suspicion in Othello's mind, all subsequent evidence does nothing but fuel Othello's suspicion and jealousy...

He has no remorse for what ensues, nor any sympathy for Othello.

You don't even have to read the whole play. Iago explains the TWO reasons in the first act--if you read it carefully.
