On number 3, I would argue that the middle has the fewest mountains. Between the Rockies and Appalachians, there are just aren't many mountains except the Black Hills, which is so close to the Rockies that they should be included in that mountain range.
It really depends on how you divide up America for your answer. Where is the dividing line between North and South, and between East and West? The CSA states of the Civil War (which most people consider the South) has lots of mountains-running from West Virginia to Georgia.
