In 1947 The Philadelphia Warriors beat the Chicago Stags 4 games to 1, and were awarded rings with diamond chips in them. That's the earliest ring I can document.
Sorry, I don't know anything about the trophy. I had enough trouble finding info on the rings. If you want me to research the trophy, it's gonna cost you! ;-)

Okay. Apparently the current trophy was originally named the Walter A. Brown trophy after the first owner of the Celtics and a founder of the NBA, back in 1964. It became the Larry trophy in 1984. (The Lakers won it that year). Before 1964 there seems to have been a championship bowl or loving cup, also named after Brown. I haven't been able to find a photograph of it. Sorry.
